Impact

At Chivenor Primary School – we are scientists. It is our intention to equip children with the foundations for understanding the world through a scientific lens. We aim to develop a fun, practical and engaging high-quality curriculum that inspires the next generation to succeed and excel. All children will develop a strong understanding of the world around them whilst acquiring specific skills and knowledge to help them to think scientifically; to gain an understanding of scientific processes and also an understanding of the uses and implications of science, today and for the future.

We want to encourage our children to answer the great mysteries of the universe by becoming independent learners by exploring possible answers to scientific-based questions. Our aim is to  inspire children to continue to use Science in their everyday lives and in the future.

Implementation

The science curriculum is overseen by the STEM hub and is led by the Science lead. Teachers at Chivenor Primary school develop the natural curiosity of each individual in the belief that every Chivenor child is a scientist in the making and their learning has no limits. Children will be encouraged to become independent learners by exploring possible answers for scientific based questions. They will be encouraged to develop and use a range of skills including observation, planning and investigation, as well as being encouraged to question the world around them. They will be given specific opportunities to focus on scientific enquiry.

Lessons will be planned to deliver engaging hands-on learning experiences using an enriched scientific vocabulary which is applied in a variety of ways to ensure our children can confidently and effectively articulate concepts. These lessons will build upon the children’s prior knowledge and learning, revisiting key areas to consolidate skills and understanding. To provide alternative and immersive experiences children will benefit from the use of Now Press play, visitors and visits to enhance learning and widen horizons.

EYFS:
The Early Years Foundation Stage Curriculum supports children’s understanding of Science through the planning and teaching of ‘Understanding the World.’ Children find out about objects, materials and living things using all of their senses looking at similarities, differences, patterns and changes. Both the environment and skilled practitioners foster curiosity and encourage explorative play, children are motivated to ask questions about why things happen and how things work. Our children are encouraged to explore the natural environment around them. Children enjoy spending time outdoors exploring mini-beasts and their habitats, observing the changing seasons, plants and animals.

Impact

The successful approach to the teaching of science at Chivenor Primary, results in a fun, engaging, high-quality science education that provides children with the foundations for understanding the world beyond primary school. Children leave knowing how to take their learning forward and they understand the possibilities for careers in science and the STEM field as a result of our enrichment activities such as the ‘Griffin Science Symposium’.

They will have knowledge which is pertinent to science within a real-life context and can retain and build on taught skills. They will not shy away from trying to answer life’s ‘Big Questions’ but will use their knowledge to reflect, reason and think critically. They will work collaboratively and practically to investigate and experiment and display confidence when articulating their understanding of scientific concepts. As a result, our children will leave our school as inquisitive global citizens who are ready to contribute positively to the future world.
